JAG Murphys Midweek
Hosted by
Michael Mergen and Carol Murray

Wed/Thu, Sept 20/21, 2017
JAG Members, Michael Mergen and Carol Murray are pleased to announce the Murphys Madness…Summer’s Mid-Week Drive with a two night adventure to Calaveras County.

Save the dates: you will find up to eighteen Jaguars (and occupants) participating in a 3-day, 2 night re-introduction to the wonders and beauties of our Sierra Nevada foothills.

Michael and Carol have been successful in arranging discounted accommodations in two of the area’s finest Bed and Breakfast properties in downtown Murphys and they were able to negotiate a 40% reduction in rates for the two nights of our gathering.  A few of the upper end accommodations are exquisite 2 bedroom units and can be shared by members who have traveled together.

The costs will vary by accommodation and the typical cost per room will average about $120+tax per night per couple. Instructions for how to book your accommodations will follow.

The adventure will begin with a gathering at Livermore Jaguar just off I-580 between 9:30 and 10:30 AM, Wednesday, September, 20th.   Then it’s off to Hwy-120 and Hwy 99 North to Cal Hwy 4 and east to Angels Camp/Murphys.  We’ll take our lunch on the patio of the Historic Murphys Hotel at 1:00 PM prior to checking in to our respective accommodations.

There are 30 tasting rooms in and around downtown Murphys and a brew pub and we’ll have several hours to visit the shops, galleries and wineries before dinner at V Restaurant adjacent to the Victoria Inn at 7:00 PM.  Michael and Carol have made arrangements for the group to visit three of the “best of the best” tasting rooms on Main Street, and the tasting fees will be waived for our group.

Thursday morning both venues will offer a continental breakfast, and full breakfast can be purchased at several locations within a short walk from any of the properties.

We’ll gather at the parking lot of the Murphys Hotel (Main Street) between 9:15 and 9:30 AM and depart for a drive on Hwy 4 to Big Trees State Park (approximately 20 miles east of Murphys).  Regardless of how often you may have visited the Park the 1+ level mile stroll through this magnificent stand of Redwoods and newly completed visitor center is not to be missed.

At 11:15 AM we’ll depart Big Trees for a 30-40 minute drive into the Sierras passing Bear Valley and the Bear Valley ski facilities arriving at Lake Alpine (elevation 7,400’) The lake is stunning (bring your cameras) and the food at the local lodge (pub fare) is more than satisfactory. They’re expecting us for lunch at 12:30 PM.  After lunch you may wish to take a stroll on the paths surrounding the lake or begin the return drive to Murphys.

Thursday late afternoon is for shopping, tasting or exploring (there are two spectacular commercial caves within a 10 minute drive of downtown).

At 6:00 PM you’re invited for cocktails and a BBQ at Michael and Carol’s home on the creek just west of downtown Murphys.  Their home was initially built to serve as a road house and restaurant back in the late 40’s and has served as a venue for convivial pursuits for 70+ years.  Come see why they call this “home”.

Friday morning is yours to sleep in, explore or perhaps take a side trip to Columbia or Jamestown (30 minutes to the south) before heading home.

There are only three of the accommodations blocked that are available for a Friday stay-over to attend the Kautz Ironstone Concours event on Saturday.  These rooms are on hold but they will be offered at their regular retail prices on a first come first served basis.  There may be additional lodging options for Friday night in the area at Sonora, Arnold or Jamestown.

Instructions of making accommodation reservations for Murphys Madness, September 20th and 21st.

All reservations (whether for the Victoria Inn, The Dunbar House or managed vacation rentals which are currently on hold for JAG members will be handled by The Victoria Inn, Murphys, CA (209) 728-8933.

Members seeking reservations should familiarize themselves with all of the inventory that can be found on The Victoria Inn website (Victoriainn-murphys.com) and then call the number above (during business hours) to begin the process.  Members should identify themselves as JAG members and will be well served to use my name (Michael Mergen) as the front desk personnel should be expecting inquiries and requests for bookings for this special offering.  The accommodations range in size and price and some of the vacation rentals currently on “hold” will accommodate two couples very comfortably.  Those seeking 2 bed room suites (most are condos or vacation cottages) should so specify and will be well served to have a firm commitment from their traveling partners before reserving their accommodation.

A few of the rooms on “hold” have availability for Friday, September 22nd and Michael would encourage only those really committed to attending the Kautz Ironstone concour event on Saturday, September 23 to reserve those rooms.  Unfortunately, the Friday evening rates will not reflect our club discount and will revert to the normal rack rate  for weekends in Murphys.

The Victoria Inn will be extending a JAG discount of their normal rates for all of the accommodations currently on hold.  The Inn accepts all major credit cards. Both the Victoria Inn and the Dunbar House offer a continental breakfast…and full breakfast restaurants are only steps away from either facility. Michael believes there are currently 18 rooms/suites/cottages on hold exclusively for our members.  If, indeed, some of the membership choose to “double up) it may be that as many as 20 couples and their vehicles could participate.  Michael extended the “hold” on the accommodations until August 1st, but there will be growing pressure as the event dates near for members to either book the accommodations or allow me to release them back to inventory.

We will announce the cost of the group meals to be sent to JAG shortly.
